Why sand? Why do we use it in therapy, especially with children? Let me tell you a story about Johnny, a little boy who found healing in the simplest of things—sand.
Johnny was 6 years old when his parents brought him to for the first time for sandplay therapy. He was quiet, withdrawn, and had recently started struggling in school. His teachers noticed he seemed anxious and often lost in his thoughts. At home, he had become distant, no longer playing with his friends or even his favorite toys. His parents were worried, unsure of how to help him express the emotions he was keeping locked away.
A New Beginning in the Sandbox
During his first session, Johnny seemed nervous. He glanced around the room, eyes wide, unsure of what to expect. But then his eyes landed on the sand tray—a wooden box filled with fine, soft sand, surrounded by shelves full of small figurines, rocks, and miniature objects. Curious, he walked over and ran his fingers through the sand. At first, he just sifted the grains through his hands, letting them flow like a tiny waterfall.

The therapist encouraged Johnny to create a world in the sand, to use the miniatures to tell a story. Slowly, Johnny began to pick up figures—a soldier, a dragon, a castle. His hands moved the figures around the tray, and gradually, a scene took shape. He was creating a battle, a fight between the dragon and the soldier, with the castle as the prize.
Sand as a Language of the Unconscious
In Jungian Sandplay Therapy, the sand is not just a plaything; it’s a powerful medium that allows us to express what we cannot put into words. For Johnny, the sand became his voice. Through the sand, he could share the turmoil and fear he was feeling inside. The battle he created was more than just a child’s imagination; it was a representation of the conflicts he faced every day—fears he couldn’t yet name or understand.
As Johnny played, the therapist gently asked questions, guiding him to explore the story he was creating. Slowly, Johnny began to open up. He talked about how scared he felt at school and how he sometimes felt like the soldier, small and powerless against the “dragons” that were his worries and fears.
The Healing Power of Sand
Over the next few sessions, Johnny continued to explore his world in the sand tray. The scenes changed—sometimes the soldier won, sometimes the dragon did. But each time, the sand helped him release the emotions he was carrying inside. He didn’t need to find the right words; the sand became the language of his unconscious mind. It allowed him to feel in control, to process his feelings at his own pace, and to safely confront the dragons in his life.
Why sand? Because it is a sensory experience that grounds us, calms us, and connects us to the present moment. The texture, the feeling of the grains moving through our fingers, provides a tactile form of expression that can bypass our conscious defenses. For children like Johnny, it becomes a bridge to their inner world, a way to communicate what they feel without fear of judgment or misunderstanding.
Johnny’s Journey to Healing
Over time, Johnny’s battles in the sand became less frequent. The dragon grew smaller, and new scenes began to emerge—peaceful gardens, happy gatherings, and, eventually, a new figure appeared: a king standing proudly in the center of a flourishing kingdom. Johnny was learning to face his fears and find strength within himself. The sand had helped him find his voice, and through this process, he began to blossom.
Johnny’s journey is a testament to the power of sand in Sandplay Therapy. It shows us that sometimes, the simplest tools can bring about the most profound healing.
