In the world of Sandplay Therapy, symbols are the language of the soul. They hold the keys to our unconscious mind. Allowing us to explore the deepest layers of our emotions, desires, and fears. I am doing sandplay therapy on daily basis with children ages 5-13 yrs. Among these powerful symbols, the tree often stands out as a profound representation of our inner world and our journey toward healing. Every sandplay process leave me, and the child, in awe and with excitement of what is unfolding.

Why Symbols Matter in Sandplay Therapy

Sandplay Therapy, rooted in Jungian psychology, uses symbols to helps you communicate feelings and thoughts that may not be easily expressed in words. Through the use of a sandbox filled with sand and various miniatures—including trees, animals, buildings, and more—clients create scenes that reflects their inner experiences.

A symbol like a tree may seem simple, but in the context of therapy, it can reveal layers of meaning about a person’s emotional state, personal growth, and life journey. When a client chooses a tree and places it in the sand, they are engaging in a form of symbolic play that taps directly into their unconscious mind.

The Tree as a Symbol of Growth and Healing

The tree is a common symbol in Sandplay Therapy, and for a good reason. Trees represent growth, stability, and life itself. They are living entities that grow roots, stand tall, and reach for the sky—just as we strive to grow, find stability, and reach our highest potential. Most often for my children it offers a space of shade,a space of nurturing. I enjoy it when they put another figurine high on the top of the tree.

For example, a child in therapy might place a small sapling in the sand, representing their own growth and potential. The tree can symbolize a young person’s development, their hopes for the future, or their desire for nurturing and care.

For an adult, a mature tree with deep roots and wide branches might represent the wisdom gained through life experiences, or it could symbolize a need to reconnect with their foundational beliefs or core values.

Roots, Trunks, and Branches: Layers of Meaning in the Tree Symbol

  1. 1. Roots: In Sandplay Therapy, the roots of the tree symbolize a connection to the unconscious mind. Just like a tree draws nourishment from the earth, our unconscious mind provides us with insights, instincts, and hidden emotions. The roots may also reflect a need for grounding, stability, or exploration of past experiences that shape who we are today.
  2. 2. Trunk: The trunk of the tree represents the self—the central aspect of who we are. It symbolizes strength, resilience, and the ability to withstand life’s challenges. When a client chooses a tree with a strong trunk, it may reflect their inner strength or their aspiration to develop a more solid sense of self. A damaged or hollow trunk might suggest feelings of vulnerability or inner conflict.
  3. 3. Branches: Branches reach outward and upward, symbolizing aspirations, personal growth, and the unfolding of life’s possibilities. They can represent a client’s goals, dreams, and connections with others. A tree with many branching arms might reflect a desire for expansion, while a tree with broken branches could indicate disappointments or setbacks in the pursuit of one’s goals.

The Healing Power of the Tree in Sandplay Therapy

In the therapeutic context, the tree serves as a guide and a mirror to the client’s internal landscape. It allows you to project your feelings and experiences onto a tangible object, making the intangible visible. Through the process of creating and interacting with the sand tray, you gain insight into your own psyche and begin the healing process. But what is so beautiful is that this happens in the unconcious-child dont need to have the words neither needs to analyze.

For instance, a client may initially choose a tree that is small and isolated, reflecting feelings of loneliness or insignificance. Sometimes a tree without leaves!! As therapy progresses and you explore their inner world, you might begin to add more elements to their tree—birds, flowers, or other trees—signifying growth, connection, and healing.

Unlocking the Language of the Unconscious

The tree, like other symbols in Sandplay Therapy, unlocks the language of the unconscious. It gives voice to what lies beneath the surface of our conscious awareness. When a you engages with these symbols, you tap into a rich source of healing and self-understanding.

By creating scenes with the tree and other objects, you can bring to light unresolved emotions, past traumas, or hidden strengths. This process allows for deep insights and emotional healing, just as the branches of a tree reach for the sky, striving for light and growth.
